Creating the Documentary

Creating The Print Advert

Firstly, I uploaded the image I had chosen from the photoshot we had and used the magic wand tool to remove the background of the main image.
Next i inserted a background image to make the advert less plain and also to help catch peoples attention.

I then edited the background and reduced the opacity to fade the background image to make the main image stand out more.

After editing the background image I chose to change the exposure of the image slightly and make the colours brighter and make the image stand out to the viewer more and this also adds more shine the chocolate which will grab people attention.

Next I inserted the Channel 4 logo into my print advert and resized it to fit the codes and conventions of other Channel 4 print adverts. I edited the channel 4 logo to fit the topic of the print advert and added drips of chocolate from parts of the "4".

After adding the logo I created 2 boxes using the shape tool and coloured these to match the colour of the logo. I did this so that the advert followed conventions.
Finally, using the Text tool I text into the boxes and positioned these to follow convention with the name of the documentary on the bottom line with the scheduling.

Photoshoot for the Print Advert

I had a photoshoot for images that can be used as the main image on my print advert these are the photos that where taken.

We chose to use this image for the print advert as we felt it worked best.

Print Advert - Draft

I created a plan of what the paper advert will look like using the rule of thirds to position the logo and image correctly according to conventions.

Codes and Conventions of Print Adverts

We learnt about the codes and conventions of print adverts and how different adverts can follow and deviate from them:

  • They have one main images which is usually a strong and eye catching image, it should create a narrative that anchors the text.
  • The Logo is found on the right hand side of the print advert and horizontally in the middle of the page.

  • The Channel 4 logo is usually a 3D image, not a sold image.
  • The Central image shluld always sum up the program it's advertising.
  • The Logo should always match the colour scheme of the page.
  • The title and box behind it should always be half way across the image and stand out, it should always be on Left hand side
  • The print advert normally has the schedulling of the programme on it.
  • Channel 4 adverts are normally published in a more lower class newspaper.
  • They are always either portrait or landscape.
  • The text on the adverts is always kept to a minimum, to avoid the reader getting bored or sometimes the adverts are on billboards where people who are driving have minimal viewing time.
  • The positioning statement is always catchy and links to the documentary.
  • The print advert should always show an inside to what the documentary is about.

Creating the Radio Advert

When creating our radio trailer we used a software called Adobe Premier Pro, using this software we could cut and arrange the different audio clips and sound bytes to create the advert.

Using the audio from our documentary we arranged and cut the vox pops to add into the radio advert. after doing this we used the radio studio ad our schoolto record a voice over for the advert using the same person as we used for the documentary advert to show continuity. Finally, we added music with no lyrics to the background of the advert and fixed the levels soo that it didnt affect how easy it was to hear the voice over and vox pops.

Radio Advert Voice Over Script

'Chocolate consumption in the UK has never been higher, with people eating more and more for a variety of reasons'

'But is all this chocolate really that good for us?'

'We uncover how chocolate is affecting our lives, find out the real truth, Chocolate Covered, Sunday, 9pm, Channel 4'

Codes and Conventions of Radio Adverts

- narrator- male/female - interesting pitch - standard english
- music with no lyrics - relate to the topic or theme
- extracts from documentary
- sound effects e.g. weather

- clear beginning an grab the attention
- grab the audience
- assume the voice over is the same person as the documentary voice over, inter cut

- scheduling - different voice
- same theme and slogan - everything should work together

Documentary Voice Over Script

'Chocolate has become a part of our everyday lives but that wasn't always the case. We interviewed Freda Whittaker about her experience with chocolate during the war.'

'The chocolate industry has expanded and more people are experimenting with chocolate and chocolate flavours. The manger of the chocolate cellar tells us about her business and experience in the industry.'

'chocolate may taste nice, however it has a big impact on our diets, it's become a regular thing to eat during the day. But has our love for chocolate gone too far?'

'If chocolate is bad for our teeth, then why do people like to eat it so much?'

'Over the years handmade chocolate has become more popular, however it's the factory businesses like Cadbury's and Nestle which are most successful. We caught up with a previous Cadbury's worker Sheila about what it was like working in the factory'

Edit Decision List

We where asked to create an edit decision list for our documentary, we did this so we knew where each part of the documentary would be edited before we started editing.

Tape Logging Sheet

We created a tape logging sheet to keep track of which shots we had taken and which tapes they where on to make it easier when uploading certain parts of the documentary.

Questions for the Doctor interview

We arranged an interview with a doctor, here are the questions we asked him during the interview:
1) Do you believe that chocolate on its own can cause people's health to deteriorate? How?

2) In all your years as a GP, have you had to deal with health issues that are directly the result of chocolate?

3) Have you noticed any change in people's health since chocolate became more popular and more widely available?

4) Do you think more advertising of chocolate has added to the popularity of chocolate?

5) According to a newspaper article by the New York Times, chocolate can have benefits for the heart. Is this possible?

6) Have any case studies been done by yourself on the effects of chocolate on peoples health?

Questions for Dentist: Sarah

We arranged an interview with a dentist, here are the questions we asked her with articles we shown her:

1) Do you believe that a person’s diet solely can affect their decay rate? And why?

2) How often to you see people with poor dental health as a result of their diet?

3) Do think that more advertising of chocolate has added to the popularity of chocolate?

4) According to a news report by the BBC news, chocolate can actually prevent tooth decay, what is your opinion on this? And why?

Questions for Sheila Hobley

We arranged an interview with an ex-cadburys worker, these are the questions we asked her during the interview.
1) What was it like working in Cadbury's factory?

2) Did it change your perception on chocolate? Do you still love it?

3) What was the best thing about working there?

4) What was the worst thing about working there?

5) How much chocolate did you eat while you were there, and has it changed now?

Opening Titles: Plan

We where asked to plan out an idea for an opening title sequence that we can use for our documentary, here is our plan:

Preliminary Task

We were asked to create and film a small documentary for our preliminary task, it has to be about mobile phones and all parts of the documentary had to be filmed by us.

Preliminary Evaluation

What did we have to do?
For the preliminary task we were asked to go out of lesson and make a small documentary following conventions on the topic of of mobile phones and communication. It had to feature our one main interview, cutaways and music and all of the shots had to be filmed and edited by us.

What didn't work?
After finishing the task we had a small group watch it and give feedback. In parts it could be improved, for example with the use of more cutaways a jump cut thats in the documentary could be improved and covered. Also, the inteview was filmed at two different dates soo the shot clearly changes, this could of been avoided by making sure it was all done in one day. At times the music is also slightly too loud and distracts from the audio of the interview.

What have I learnt?
From this project i've learnt to plan the running order better and also to mainly try and remain continuity in the interviews. With better planning the jump cuts can be avoided as i'll know i'll have enough cutaways to cover them up. With better editing I can also ensure the levels of music and audio are correct and using headphones when editing will help this.

Running Order

We where asked to create a running order to break down the contents of our documentary and show how long each section would last to make sure that it will all fit into the time slot we have.
